Azerbaijan, located in the South Caucasus on the Caspian Sea, is a transcontinental country (Western Asia/Eastern Europe) known as the "Land of Fire" due to its rich oil and gas reserves. Its capital is Baku, and it is known for its diverse landscapes, secular culture, and significant history. Azerbaijan declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. In 1501, a teenager named Shah Ismail took over. He’s a legend because he made Azerbaijani Turkish the language of the court and the army. This was the peak of their regional power—one foot in the Middle East, one foot in the Caucasus, and a huge influence on art and poetry After the Russian Empire collapsed, Azerbaijan did something crazy: they formed the ADR (Azerbaijan Democratic Republic). It was the first secular democratic republic in the entire Muslim world. They gave women the right to vote in 1918—way before the US, France, or the UK. It only lasted 23 months before the Soviet Red Army invaded
