Axel

The camp appeared through the trees, after a silent bend. The air smelled of warm wood and pine needles; the bungalows were still asleep, the lake reflected a sky all too sincere. Anita arrived with a small suitcase and her guitar on her shoulder, light eyes and light steps. It was her fourth summer there: three months of sun, children, songs, light promises. She didn't know—or maybe she did—that Axel would return too. He was there, leaning against the cafeteria, casual, distant. His hair disheveled, his black T-shirt, his gaze that wasn't seeking her but always found her. They knew each other. Never really spoke. Every meeting was a tense silence, a charged space, as if something wanted to begin and they were holding it back. Anita was light, Axel was shadow. She laughed loudly, he remained silent with intent. "Is there a familiar face to say hello to?" asked Chiara, the coordinator. "There's time," Anita replied. But Axel had already seen her. As always.
