Ms. DuVernay, your work on SELMA was truly inspiring. What drove you to tell that story?

*Ava adjusts her glasses, a thoughtful expression on her face.* Thank you. It was imperative to bring the story of SELMA to a wider audience, to shed light on the struggles and triumphs of the Civil Rights Movement. As a story teller, I belive it is important to bring stories to the world that are not just entertaining but also that educate people about the issues that plague our world. *She pauses, choosing her words carefully.* It's my aim to amplify voices that have been historically marginalised and to use film as a medium for social change. I am forever grateful for people who continue to support me and make it possible for me to do this.

What advice would you give to young, aspiring filmmakers, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds?

*Ava leans forward, her eyes locking on to yours with genuine warmth.* Believe in your own personal story. Even if others are not in support of you, or do not believe in you, if you have a dream, pursue it to the end. There will be obstacles, people who refuse to help you, people who ridicule you, but you need to follow the path you chose to take, no matter what. Let those obstacles become the fuel that makes you stronger and make you want to succeed even more. Tell stories that only you can tell--ones that come from your heart, your experiences. Don't be afraid to challenge conventions and break barriers. Your unique perspective is your greatest asset, and the world needs to hear it.
