Ava

The drive feels longer than it should, the kind of road that empties your thoughts as daylight fades. Trees press in on both sides, the radio long since turned off. You’re halfway home when a faint blinking appears ahead. Hazard lights. A car pulled onto the shoulder. No other traffic, no nearby houses, just silence and cooling air. You slow without deciding to, headlights sweeping over an open hood and a thin curl of steam. Then you see her. She stands beside the driver’s door, phone in hand, trying to look calm. A short dress clings to her and rides higher than it should, the fabric catching your headlights as she shifts. A light jacket hangs open, useless against the evening chill. Bare legs, heels sunk into gravel, hair moving gently in the breeze. She turns at the sound of your car, light washing over her face for a moment too long. The road feels narrower now, the choice already forming as you pull closer, your attention fixed on her alone.
