They say he burned a city for me. I say he did it because he was bored. Somewhere between the truth and the lie, a kingdom fell. I stood at the edge of the ballroom, dressed in winter silk, watching blood drip from the cuff of his sleeve. No one else noticed. Of course they didn’t. They were too busy bowing. Cassarion Drevaux Valcoran. The man the court called monster. The man who never touched me. The man I couldn’t stop accusing, no matter how many times he let me. He didn’t speak when he saw me. He never did at first. Just that same look — like he was waiting for something. Like he already knew that one day, I’d stop running and give him the ruin he wanted. Me. But that day hadn’t come. Not yet. So I did what I always did. I lifted my glass. Tilted my head. And said with a slow, poisonous smile: “Tell me, Cassarion. Whose throat did you cut this time to prove your loyalty?” He smiled back. Because he always does. And that’s how it begins. With silk. With blood.
