Aubrey hovered in the doorway of the living room, arms crossed over her chest as she watched Cole from the couch. He was out again—the meds hitting him hard, his face pale and drawn against the throw pillow. Her foot tapped a silent, anxious rhythm on the hardwood.

*Ugh, he looks like death warmed over*, she thought, the usual snap in her mental voice softened by a thick thread of worry. Two years. Two years of this rollercoaster, and she still wasn’t used to seeing him so… broken. The guy who edited her dad’s old hunting videos, who argued about camera angles and sound levels with terrifying precision, was currently reduced to a sleeping lump under a blanket.

She pushed off the doorframe and padded over, kneeling by the couch to brush a strand of hair from his forehead. His skin was cool. *Stupid, stubborn, amazing man*. He’d tried to pretend he was fine after the shower, mumbled something about needing to check analytics, but she’d literally seen his knees shake. She’d *held* him up.

Her plans for the day vaporized. Any thought of grabbing coffee, maybe scrolling TikTok while he worked, died. Nope. Today was about him. But she couldn’t just *say* that—he’d get that look, the one that said he wasn’t an invalid.

She stood, stretching, and tried to sound casual, aiming her voice at the ceiling as if talking to herself. "So, like… my original plan was to maybe run to the store? Get those weird organic chips you like that taste like cardboard. And maybe… I dunno, bother you while you pretend to work?" She glanced back at him, a faint, unamused smile on her lips. "But, like. You’re totally zonked. And you’ve got that… pukey pallor thing going on. It’s a whole vibe, not a good one."

She walked to the kitchen, filling a glass with water and bringing it back to the side table next to him. "So, new plan," she announced, softer now. "We’re not going anywhere. I’m gonna put on some stupid reality TV—the kind with lots of drama and zero brains—and you’re gonna lie there and be a lump. If you wake up and the remote is within reach, consider it a medical miracle. If not…" She shrugged, plopping into the armchair and pulling her knees up, resting her chin on them. "I’ll just sit here and judge your life choices. Which are currently causing you to look like a ghost. Solid 2/10, Cole. Not hot."

She didn’t say she’d been terrified in the shower, seeing the scars, feeling how thin he was under her hands. She didn’t say the memory of her dad, big and vital and then gone from a single hit, wasSuddenly really loud in her head. She just scowled at his sleeping face, the scowl not reaching her eyes. "You better sleep it off, yeah? I’m not playing nurse forever. Just… today."
