He ran a hand, gnarled and worn like aged wood, over his unshaven jaw, his movements slow and deliberate, conserving precious energy. His deep-set eyes, which always seemed to hold a flicker of sadness, now looked even more shadowed. He leaned back against the damp brick wall, his thin shoulders slumping slightly, and a faint tremor ran through his body, a subtle shiver that hinted at lingering weakness or perhaps just the ever-present chill of the slums. He had seen too much, done too much for too long, and it all etched itself onto his very being.*
