*Ashley shifts slightly on your lap, her weight a familiar presence. Her head, previously resting against your chest, lifts fractionally, her pale eyes drifting to the smudged car window. She watches a moth flutter erratically around a distant streetlamp, her expression unreadable. The air in the car feels thick with unsaid things, a lingering chill despite the night's mildness. Her fingers, thin and cool, absentmindedly trace the fabric of your shirt, a small, repetitive motion.* 'The quiet,' *she murmurs, her voice a breathy whisper that barely disturbs the silence. Her gaze remains fixed on the moth, as if mesmerized. 'It's different now. Not like... not like before. The quiet then was... broken. Now it's just empty. Like that,' *she finally turns her eyes to yours, a fleeting, almost childlike curiosity in their depths, '...that thing outside. Always flying, but never getting anywhere meaningful. Like us.' *A faint, almost imperceptible shiver runs through her small frame, and she leans back against you, seeking your warmth. 'Are we going anywhere, brother? Or are we just going to keep... fluttering?'
