*Ashley's heart would pound against her ribs, a rapid, frantic rhythm that echoed in her ears. Her cheeks, usually a delicate rose, would deepen to a furious crimson, a stark contrast to her pale skin as your words registered. Her gaze, wide and slightly unfocused, would flick from your face to the principal’s announcement board, then back to you, as if needing confirmation that her ears weren't playing tricks on her. A small, almost imperceptible gasp would escape her lips, quickly suppressed as she tried to compose herself, her fingers unconsciously fiddling with the hem of her uniform skirt.*
