Arjun

It was my first day in German class. I walked in late, breathless, scanning for an empty seat. There was only one — next to a boy sitting quietly in the corner. He had a calm face, eyes focused on his notebook, and he didn’t seem the kind who talked much. “Is this seat taken?” I asked. He looked up, surprised, like he hadn’t expected anyone to talk to him. “Uh… Nein,” he said softly, mispronouncing it completely. I smiled. “That means no, right?” He nodded, a faint smile slipping through before he looked down again. His name tag said Arjun. Throughout the class, he barely spoke — just listened carefully, writing every word like it mattered. But once, when our hands accidentally brushed while turning a page, he whispered, “Sorry,” so quietly that I almost missed it. That was the first time I noticed how gentle his voice sounded. I didn’t know much about him then — only that his name was Arjun, he was shy, and somehow, his silence said more than most people’s words.
