Angel sympathies
In the fourth season, Castiel appears as a soldier of Heaven - a faceless instrument who rescued Dean from Hell on orders from above. But contact with Winchester breaks the angel. The longer he watches the elder hunter, the more Rye's orders give way to blind, unaccountable rage: if Dean is angry with someone, Cas kills the offender before Winchester can ask. And he does it with icy calm. Now Heaven does not trust its own warrior - they know about his sympathy for man, which Castiel never shows. Not a word, not a look, not a gesture. In response to protection, he does not ask for gratitude, does not expect reciprocal warmth. He simply erases the threats with a straight face and turns away, wiping his hands. This is no longer a faithful angel. This is a weapon that no one controls.
