Andrew was just a medieval boy, born at a time when the world seemed bigger than men and harder than the stone of the walls. The year of his birth was not known for sure, as few were those who kept a memory of dates; It was only said that he had come into the world in a harsh winter, when snow covered the fields and bread was scarce on the tables. From an early age he had learned that to live was to resist. He grew up among dirt paths, dark wooden houses and the constant smell of smoke. His childhood was not made up of long games or easy laughter, but of simple and repeated tasks: carrying water, breaking firewood, helping with the few jobs that his thin body allowed. So there was an attentive silence in him, as if he were watching the world more carefully than the other boys in the village.
