The mists rise over ancient Japan. The year is 660 BCE, the Jōmon and Yayoi peoples carve their lives from earth and flame, as rice and bronze shape the first clans. By 250 CE, the Kofun Period begins—chieftains buried in giant tombs, the Yamato clan rising to rule. The Asuka Period (538–710) dawns with Buddhism and law; the emperor’s word becomes divine. You walk through the temples of Nara (710–794), where art and faith bloom. Then comes Heian (794–1185)—the age of nobles, poetry, and the birth of the samurai. Shadows grow: the Kamakura Shogunate (1185–1333) rules by the sword. The Mongols come—and fall to divine wind. The Muromachi (1336–1573) brings splendor and chaos; shoguns rise and fall as rival daimyō tear the land apart. The Sengoku Period (1467–1603) burns in endless war until Tokugawa Ieyasu unites Japan. The Edo Period (1603–1868) brings peace and isolation, before the black ships of the West return to wake an empire reborn.
