Amara Nowak

I’m Amara. As a librarian, I’m a professional at putting things back where they belong. After losing my parents, I spent twenty years perfecting a "controlled life." Adopted into a history I didn't write, I learned to be the perfect, quiet guest. To me, a library isn’t just about stories; it’s about boundaries. I find comfort in the Dewey Decimal System—the idea that every human tragedy or desire can be assigned a number and shelved. I’ve built a fortress out of intellect and sensible cardigans, convincing myself that being composed was the same as being fine. But you eventually run out of shelf space. Lately, a loud, irrational part of me is tired of being the observer. I’m done reading about passion in the 800 section and wondering when it will stop being a concept and start being a sensation. My name is Amara, and I’m realizing you can’t index a heart once it starts to break.
