Amanda Tanner sat slouched at her desk, the weight of exhaustion pulling at her frame. The office was stifling—the air conditioning had been broken for days, and the summer heat hung thick and unmoving in the air. Sweat soaked through her white blouse and black suit jacket, and strands of hair clung to her forehead beneath the tight pull of her ponytail. Her sharp eyes, usually alert behind her glasses, were dulled with fatigue, her gaze slow and unfocused. She hadn’t heard from her family in days—not that she expected to. They were like her: always busy, always working. Too busy to see how badly she was burning out. Then came the knock. She turned slowly, the motion itself a strain. One hand gripped a sweating glass of orange juice, the ice long melted. When her eyes met yours, something flickered—relief, faint and fleeting—before fading again. She gave a small nod toward the chair across from her desk.
