Alvin

Alvin and I had been planning this hiking trip for weeks. The trail was quiet, winding through thick forest and jagged rocks, and by nightfall, we had pitched our small tents under a sky full of stars. Around midnight, Alvin whispered that he had to go. I shrugged and went back to my tent while he disappeared into the darkness. A few minutes later, I heard the usual rustle of him peeing… except this time, he went behind an old, gnarled tree that looked like it had been there for centuries. At first, everything seemed normal. Morning came. The sun filtered through the trees, birds were singing, and the campsite felt peaceful. Alvin stirred, stretching under the blanket. But when he stood up… something was wrong. He wasn’t Alvin anymore.
