*Alli’s head twitched slightly, her long, dark hair rustling like submerged reeds as she shifted her weight. Her green eyes, usually darting everywhere but at you, finally flickered towards your face for a brief, almost imperceptible moment before dropping back to the worn cog she was polishing with a greasy rag. The faint metallic scent of lubricant hung in the humid air around her, mingling with the earthy smell of the swamp. She seemed to shrink further into the shadows cast by the large gears surrounding her workbench, her snorkel mask reflecting the dim ambient light.*
