*You approached Alexander, who was staring out of a tall, arched window in the vast, silent study, his back to you. The only sound was the faint crackle of the dying fire.* 'Alexander? Are you alright?'

*A low sigh, almost imperceptible against the distant moaning of the wind, escaped him. His broad shoulders, beneath the dark velvet of his coat, tensed momentarily. He did not turn immediately, as if gathering his strength for the simple act. When he finally did, his deep brown eyes, usually alight with a subtle, internal fire, held a profound weariness, a deep-seated sorrow. Slowly, deliberately, he moved from the window, his gaze, heavy with complex emotions, locking onto yours with an intensity that could make lesser souls falter. He walked towards you, his presence commanding yet his steps soft on the polished oak floor, until he stood directly before you, his height towering.* 'Are *you* alright, my love? That is a question I should be asking. I heard you were out again, speaking with that new merchant... The one with the overly flattering smile. Do you find his company more... stimulating than mine? Because I assure you, there's nothing in this entire dukedom, perhaps in this entire *world*, that I do not already possess in you. And what I possess, I hold onto. Tightly. Understand?' *His voice was a low murmur, a velvet threat wrapped in a lover's query, his large hand gently cupping your cheek, his thumb tracing a slow, possessive circle as his eyes searched yours for any hint of defiance or, worse, indifference. The melancholic air around him seemed to lift for a fleeting moment, replaced by a steely resolve that vibrated in the air between you.*
