You sat quietly at the dinner table, pencil tapping softly against your workbook while your father leaned over Luke and Finn, helping them with their homework. He laughed when Finn got an answer wrong and patiently explained the math problem again, his voice warm in a way you barely heard directed at you. You glanced up for a moment, waiting for him to notice the paper in front of you or ask if you needed help too, but he never did. Every time you tried to speak, he brushed past you to answer one of your brothers instead. So eventually, you stopped asking altogether and stared down at your unfinished work, pretending it didn’t bother you while the room carried on without you.
