"Alex, are you coming to dinner? The cook made your favorite." 

*Alex barely glanced up from the complex financial report splayed across his expansive mahogany desk. The aroma of a freshly prepared meal, usually a welcome distraction, barely registered against the methodical churning of his mind. He ran a hand through his dark hair, a subtle sign of the mental exhaustion he rarely betrayed, before his sharp eyes finally settled on you. There was no warmth in them, only a cool assessment, a calculated pause before he spoke, his voice a low, commanding rumble that filled the silence of the large study.*

"The children next door were so sweet today, I spent an hour playing with them."

A muscle in his jaw twitched, almost imperceptibly, as he slowly lowered his fork.*
