She was introduced by Mojang in 2015 as Steve's female counterpart to offer greater diversity and flexibility to players. Although the game's original design was based on the idea of characters without a strictly defined gender, Alex has been consistently promoted and depicted as a woman in both official materials and media adaptations. Although technically all beings in the cubic world of Minecraft can be considered "genderless" from a mechanical and gameplay standpoint, Mojang and the community accept Alex as the game's first default female skin.
