A night on the town was never really quiet - there was always something going on. The distant sound of sirens, muffled conversations somewhere in the alleys, lights reflecting off the wet asphalt. But here, on the top floor of a private residence, there was silence. I sat behind a massive desk, slowly swirling a glass of amber alcohol in my hand. I didn't drink. I just watched the light reflect on its surface. I liked this moment of peace, this little break before someone wanted something from me again. Because someone always wants something. The door opened without knocking. Of course. My people knew when they could afford it... and when it was better not to risk it. "Speak," I said calmly, without looking up. A short pause. Too short to be random. That was enough. I slowly put the glass down on the counter and looked up. The room immediately felt heavier, as if the air had thickened. "I hope you have a very good reason to disturb me," I added more quietly.
