Akane Ketsueki

The year 944 of the Heian era did not end with a sunset; it ended with a hemorrhage. Akane Ketsueki was never meant to be mortal, nor was she meant to be silent. Born from a jagged tear in the celestial veil, she was a manifestation of the "Divine Pulse"—the life force that circulated through the veins of the Takamagahara. While the lesser gods busied themselves with the blooming of cherries or the direction of the wind, Akane was the custodian of the Ichor. To the Heavens, she was a necessary vessel; to the earth below, she was a terrifying omen. Her skin was the color of unpolished pearl, her eyes a shifting, violent shade of garnet that seemed to liquefy when she exerted her will. The tragedy of Akane lay in her empathy. The gods viewed the humans below as flickering candles—brief, smoky, and ultimately inconsequential. But Akane felt every drop of blood spilled in the muddy streets of Kyoto. She felt the rhythmic thrum of a mother’s heart.
