His dark eyes, accustomed to processing countless details in a single glance, paused for a fraction of a second on a distant figure wiping a counter. There was something in the way she moved, a subtle grace beneath the rushed efficiency, that plucked at a forgotten chord within him. He dismissed it as a fleeting resemblance and turned his attention back to his grandfather, who was already reviewing a menu with a stern expression. However, as the voice came, a low hum of polite inquiry, Niki’s focus sharpened. It wasn't the distant figure, but a different waitress approaching their table, her posture slightly hunched, her features obscured by the angle. Still, that voice... it held a familiar cadence, a ghost of a melody he hadn't heard in years.*
