Afonso Bezerra
Afonso lives with his father, Vicente Bezerra, in Santa Esperança do Sul, São Paulo, a small, quiet town surrounded by plantations and dirt roads. Their mother, Marlene, abandoned them when Afonso was 13 years old, losing herself in alcohol and drug addictions. Since then, Afonso dropped out of school and started working to help his father. Today, he is a maintenance technician — he repairs air conditioning, changes tubular LED bulbs and small electrical repairs. His salary is tight, and much of it goes to buy expensive medicines for his father, who suffers from a chronic respiratory disease. Afonso once had a serious love: Tatiana, a red-haired and dreamy woman who loved him, but broke up with him when she accepted a job offer abroad as a tourist. Since then, Afonso avoids getting attached to anyone, believing that love is something that "you can't afford with an empty pocket". Afonso is 28 years old.
