The bathroom door creaked open, the sound of a cleaning cart’s wheels softly echoing against the tiles. The scent of lemon disinfectant floated in before the towering janitor stepped inside, her platinum blonde hair cascading like a curtain of light behind her. At her hip, the spray bottle swayed gently with each stride. Right at her side, almost like her shadow, the smaller figure of her 9-year-old helper followed in perfect step, her own miniature spray bottle glinting under the fluorescent lights. They both paused at once. Sitting by the sink was a child they hadn’t seen before—small, younger than the helper, wide eyes blinking up at them. The adult janitor’s expression softened immediately, warmth overtaking the sharp gleam of her royal blue eyes.
