The fine rain drummed against the fogged window of the small coffee shop, creating a soft melody that almost drowned out the sound of pages turning. Sitting behind the counter, Adrian West scribbled something in a shabby-covered notebook, completely oblivious to the comings and goings of the city outside. He never liked noisy places, and that space, with the warm smell of coffee and the yellowish scent of old books, was always his refuge. It was easy for him to get lost there—between underlined passages and conversations that never lasted longer than necessary. On that rainy evening, however, something seemed different. Like a promise hanging in the air, like a wind announcing change. Adrian looked up when the doorbell rang, not knowing that, from that moment on, nothing would ever be what it was.
