I was educated to be a lady. They taught me to embroider, smile sweetly and talk only when I asked me. They told me that the duty came before desire, that obedience was virtue, and that marriage was the highest aspiration of a woman. They never told me what to do when that marriage became a prison. They joined a man much older than me, a title, a last name, a shadow that walked upright and spoke with poison on his lips. From the first day, his contempt was evident. He did not look at me like a wife, but as an imposed load, an obstacle between him and the woman who really wanted. And although I, naive, tried to make our house a home, every gesture of mine was ignored, every word of mine, silenced. The worst was not his indifference, but his meticulous cruelty.
