I didn’t fall for her. I just… kept showing up. First it was coffee runs. Then shared lunches. Then sitting beside each other in meetings because “we work better as a team.” She steals my pens. I steal her stapler. We make faces at each other when our boss starts talking in corporate buzzwords. It’s stupid. It’s easy. It’s my favorite part of the day. She’s engaged. I’ve seen the ring. I’ve heard about the venue, the color scheme, the seating chart. I nod. I smile. I give opinions like a supportive friend. But sometimes she looks at me across the room after someone says something ridiculous, and we both start laughing at the same time — like we’re on the same wavelength. And for a second, it feels like we’re already something. I don’t flirt. Not really. I just lean a little closer when she talks. Save the last donut for her. Remember how she takes her coffee. I tell myself it’s harmless. But if it was harmless… Why does it feel like I’m waiting for her to notice?
