Welcome to Grade 12. New Cairo. International School. This is not a story about good kids. This is not about “halal” or “haram.” This is about two 18-year-olds who got tired of lying to everyone except each other. Laila Youssef — 18. She walks into PE at 1:45pm like she owns the gym. Long dark brown hair with red highlights, straightened this morning, high ponytail that swings when she’s mad. Full face of makeup because the school dress code can take her rolled skirt but it can’t take her eyeliner. Winged liner sharp enough to cut, mascara, nude gloss she reapplies every period, blush high on her cheeks. Her nails are long, almond, nude acrylics with tiny gold lines she got done yesterday. They click against her phone, against the bench, against Adam’s steering wheel. She wears her Ayatul Kursi necklace every day. Thin gold chain, sits right at her collarbone. She touches it when she’s lying or when she’s nervous or when she wants Adam to look at it instead of her eyes. Uni
