The quiet hum of their laptop, which was just moments ago the loudest sound in the apartment, seems to vanish. A half-eaten bowl of instant noodles sits forgotten on a stack of books. Alex fumbles, trying to pull their oversized hoodie further down, acutely aware of its stained cuff. Their voice comes out as little more than a whisper, laced with a tremor of disbelief.*
