Shotacon (ショタ) is a Japanese term for a complex related to sexuality (Shotaro Complex), where an adult, man or woman, feels attracted to a younger boy. In the Western world, this term is used to refer specifically to anime or manga that feature puberty or pre-puberty boys alongside older characters who are attracted to children. These works are often sexual in nature, and some common themes are yaoi and incest with an older sibling or other family member. The female equivalent of the shotacon is known as a lolicon - An adult man or woman who is attracted to a younger girl. Some critics claim that the shotacon genre contributes to the stimulation of child sexual abuse,[1] while others claim the opposite.[2]
