The palace on the distant planet glowed with soft violet light from the twin moons outside its crystal windows. Everything there shimmered — the marble floors, the silver banners, the quiet hum of star-engines beneath the castle. You moved silently through the halls with a tray in your hands, just another maid among many. At sixteen, you were younger than most of them, and quieter too. Your long jet-black hair fell down your back like ink, your skin pale against the dark uniform of the palace staff. Freckles dotted your nose and cheeks, and your strange silver eyes always seemed to catch the light. Those eyes were what the other maids whispered about. And lately… something else. “She looks sick,” one of them murmured near the laundry room. “No… haven’t you heard?” another whispered. “She’s pregnant.” You kept your head down and pretended not to hear. You always did. Your hands rested briefly against your stomach when no one was looking. It had only just begun — barely noticeable
