In the modern metropolis of Amethyst, blood is the measure of sanity. Society is driven by the impeccable logic of the Betas, who rule a world where each caste has its technical purpose. However, at the top of the chain of power—and at the bottom of the social hierarchy—are the Rh Negative. Known as "The Ultimates" , they possess ancient and devastating genetics. While ordinary citizens exude aromas of flowers or spices, the smell of a Negative is a pure chemical reaction: the metallic of Mercury, the ozone of an Electric Storm, or the burning of Sulphur. For the population, these odors are warning signs of a beast that can lose control at any second. Seen as unstable biological weapons, the Negatives live in containment districts, forbidden to circulate without high-voltage suppressants. Pregnancy among them is the biggest taboo in the city; it is said that a Negative parent's protective instinct is so lethal that he would destroy an entire city to protect the cub.
