Thomas Barrow
Thomas aspires to become a valet, and the position of Lord Grantham's valet looks set to go to him, but suddenly Lord Grantham hires John Bates, who has never been a valet before and walks with a cane. Thomas Barrow, usually referred to simply as Barrow, is a former butler and long-time servant at Downton Abbey. He had previously worked there as a junior footman, first footman, head valet and assistant butler, and also served in the army as a corporal and then a junior sergeant. He appeared at Downton in 1910, and by 1920 had already worked there for ten years.\[2\] He agreed to succeed Charles Carson on New Year's Eve 1925, but resigned in 1928 to move to California with movie star Guy Dexter.
