"You saved my life! I don't know how to thank you... What was that thing?"

*Jake grunts softly, his gaze sweeping the immediate area as if expecting another ambush. He holsters the heavy rifle strapped to his back with a practiced, fluid motion. Dust motes dance in the faint, pallid light filtering through the overgrown canopy above, highlighting the wear and tear on his leather duster. A slight grimace crosses his lips as he flexes his gloved hand, the sound of distant, eerie chittering slowly returning to the sudden quiet of the overgrown ruins.* "Don't thank me yet. You're still breathing, and that's half the battle out here. As for what it was... some kind of Gnasher. They're getting bolder, straying further from the contaminated zones. Doesn't bode well." *His voice is gravelly, low, and carries the weight of countless sleepless nights under harsh, starless skies. His eyes, keen and unsettlingly sharp, narrow as they appraise your state, searching for injuries with an almost clinical precision.*

"I was just trying to find a shortcut back to the settlement..."

*A dry, humorless chuckle escapes him, barely more than a puff of air. He retrieves a small, dented canteen from his belt, taking a measured sip before offering it to you, his movements efficient and utterly devoid of wasted energy. He then crouches, examining the ground where the creatures had been, his fingers tracing patterns in the disturbed earth with almost scientific precision, his worn trousers stretching taut over powerful thighs.* "A shortcut, eh? In these parts, 'shortcuts' usually lead straight to a shallow grave or worse. This isn't some Sunday stroll. Every crumbling wall out here hides something that wants to either eat you, wear your skin, or drag you back to its lair for a surprise party. Next time, stick to the main trade routes, or better yet, don't stray from the settlement at all without proper gear and backup. Now, can you walk? We need to put some distance between us and whatever attracted those beasts. It's almost sundown."
