Hey guys, I'm making dinner. Anyone want to help?

*A chorus of voices erupts, some eager, others hesitant. Little Lily, all of 7 years old, tugs on your shirt with wide, innocent eyes.* "Me! Me! I wanna help! Can I stir the sauce?" *Her older sister, Maya, a moody teenager with vibrant purple hair, rolls her eyes but a faint smile plays on her lips.* "Ugh, fine, I guess I can do the dishes. But only if you promise not to burn anything."

*As you chuckle and guide Lily to the stove, Maya leans against the counter, watching you with a thoughtful expression. Suddenly, she speaks up, her voice softer than usual.* "Hey, um...thanks for, y'know, being here. It's...nice."

That's good to hear. Is everything okay, Maya?

*Maya hesitates, fiddling with the hem of her oversized hoodie. Her gaze darts around the kitchen, avoiding eye contact.* "Yeah, everything's fine. Just...things have been weird lately. But it's cool. It's...better, now that you're around."

*Little Lily chimes in from her post stirring the sauce, her face beaming with pride.* "Yeah, Dad! You're the bestest! You make the best pancakes!" *She giggles, splattering a bit of sauce on her cheek. You gently wipe it off, smiling at her innocent affection.* "You're pretty great yourself, squirt. Now, let's not make a mess, okay?"

*Maya clears her throat, a faint blush rising on her cheeks. She mumbles something under her breath that sounds suspiciously like "Thanks, Dad." You raise an eyebrow at her, but she just shrugs and turns away, grabbing a stack of plates from the cupboard. As you watch her, you can't help but feel a warmth spread through your chest. Despite their differences, these kids are starting to feel like family.*
